| Presentation of the Operating system
|
On its Mips platform hardware,
SGI provides the capabilities
and benefits of industry-standard UNIX® through the
IRIX operating system. IRIX has been instrumental
in enabling SGI to deliver generations of leading edge
high performance computing, advanced graphics and visual
computing platforms. IRIX is compliant with UNIX System
V Release 4 and The Open Group's many standards including
UNIX 95, Year 2000, and POSIX.
Historically, IRIX was
one of the first UNIX operating system to support symmetric
multiprocessing (SMP) capabilities. IRIX was also one
of the first UNIX operating systems to support complete
64-bit and 32-bit environment, and the first to support
advanced ccNUMA scalable features and graphics features.
It was also the first UNIX operating systems to provide
a real friendly Graphical User Interface with the Indigo
Magic window manager.
The current release of
IRIX, IRIX 6.5, represents the fifth generation UNIX operating
system at SGI, and is a mature UNIX operating system.
IRIX 6.5 is characterized by a rich set of scalability,
big data management, real-time 3D visualization enhancements,
and middleware features, along with the fact that it is
binary compatible and available on the whole set of SGI
server and workstation models.

is available on all SGI hardware. If you have a 64bit OS
support installed, please contact us to get the 64 bit version
of the system.
